CREDIT CARD SCAM ALERT

Big Island police are warning the public about a credit card scam.

Several citizens have reported receiving suspicious messages on their mobile devices. A recorded messages claims that the caller's credit card or debit card has been deactivated due to a security breach and directs the recipient to press "1" to reactivate the card. Upon pressing "1," the potential victim is directed to a live voice, usually a person with a foreign accent, who asks for confidential financial information, such as the card number, expiration date and other information that could lead to identity theft.

Police urge anyone who receives such a call to hang up without providing any identifying or financial information. In addition, they should call their wireless service provider to find out how they can block future nuisance calls originating from that number.

Could this be the advent of a new kind of crime wave in Volcano?

Someone from the mainland recently purchased a foreclosed house in MLE near Eighth and Jade.  It sat unattended for a few weeks while a local relative was off-island.  Upon his return, he stopped by to check it out and found the house had been stripped of interior French doors and misc items.  All windows were unlocked, suggesting that the thieves were coming back.  A police report was filed, and according to the relative reporting this incident to me, apparently the police have been checking with immediate neighbors about this theft.

Volcanites know that there are many vacant homes throughout Volcano, some with Real Estate signs and many without.  I suspect we will hear more about this type of crime as long as these properties remain vacant.  We sympathize with those who have lost their homes during this bad economy, but we must remain vigilant in our neighborhoods so that these unattended structures don't fall into the hands of those who would exploit them for their own purposes.

Also, a reminder to those who have a FaceBook account (and those who might be considering it), request to join the VolcanOhana Group on FaceBook where you can share your ideas and concerns about everything Volcano.
